The French Broad Classic River Dory
French Broad Boatworks spent years researching the history of wooden boats and oar powered guide boats before designing current models, taking inspiration from the Adirondack Guide boat, River Dory, and Colonial Bateau. The Classic River Dory was created primarily for eco-tourism. The River Dory is ideal for fly fishing, quiet evening cruises, camping expeditions, birding, and accessing restricted lakes where motors are prohibited.

Our mission in crafting the Classic River Dory was to create a boat combining the durability of the latest advances of modern materials with the beautiful history and simplicity of hand-built wooden boats. Through our efforts, we developed a wood-framed rib system, sheathed with marine grade plywood and polyethylene honeycomb material. The honeycomb core material is then laminated with fiberglass and kevlar, followed by a thin layer of UHMW (ultra high molecular weight plastic) or Linex (truck bed liner) to protect the bottom of the boat. There are several transom options including a square transom for a motor mount or the traditional double ended Dory, solely used for drifting the river. We prefer to run electric motors with our boats and are currently a dealer for Torqeedo motors. Gas or electric powered motors equivalent to a 10 hp or under are ideal for drift boat assist. Custom cabinetry, casting braces, and seating are available upon request. We will customize the boat to fit your needs.
